Wells Baseball Hosts Lancaster Bible

Wells Baseball Hosts Lancaster Bible

This weekend when the Wells College baseball team hosted the Lancaster Bible Chargers for a 3 game series, the Express also honored their three seniors.

Ryan Foody

Ben Beratta

Luke Eitner

The first game of the series did not start out the way the Express would have hoped. The visiting chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and added 8 more runs in the 4th. It would take until the 7th inning when Luke Eitner would hit a home run-scoring Aaron Izquierdo for the Express to get on the board for the first time that day. The Express would score again in the 9th inning when Stephen Dietl would double to left-center field scoring Zac Legaretta and Bradly Mills. Bradley Perry would come in and settle things down on the mound for Wells College throwing 6 innings and giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Chargers would win the first game by a score of 14-4.

In the second game of the series Sunday morning the senior Luke Eitner would start for the Express. Lancaster Bible would score 2 runs in the top of the first but the Express would answer right back in the bottom of the first when Aaron Izquierdo would single to left sending home Zack Odum. The bats for the Express would continue to warm up and Aaron Izquierdo homered in the 3rd inning. Zac Legaretta would then homer in the 4th and the 6th inning! For the game, Aaron Izquierdo would hit 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs but it was not enough as the Express fell once again, this time by the score of 10-6. Connor Carr Matthes would come in relief in this game going for 1.2 innings giving up only 3 hits and 0 runs.

The third game would find the Express in a similar position as the series opener. In the first inning, the visiting chargers scored 10 runs on 6 hits and errors by Wells College. In the bottom of the second inning, the Express would start to chip away at the Charger's lead when John Valinoti homered to left field sending home Zac Legaretta. In the 6th inning, Juan Correa would get in on the action when he would hit his first home run over the left-field fence that would also score Zac Legaretta. One of the senior captains, Luke Eitner, who hit a home run on Saturday, would maintain his hot bat and crush another home run in this game sending home Aaron Izquierdo. Jack Fields and Dylan Cappello came in relief this game and held to Chargers to 3 runs on 9 hits only allowing 3 runs.  Despite the hot-hitting, the chargers won once again, 13-7.
