Wells Baseball Hosts SUNY Poly in Home Opening Series

The SUNY Poly Wildcats traveled to Aurora NY to take on the Wells Express baseball team in a doubleheader on Saturday and an afternoon game on Sunday.

The Express had opened their season on the road at USMMA and taken only 1 out of 3 games.

The first game of the 3 game set saw the Express fall by a score of 9-1. Not the way the Express had hoped to start the series, but it certainly lit a fire under them for the second game of the doubleheader. Connor Carr-Matthews, who earned the win in game two, went five strong innings and gave up only 1 run and 2 hits while striking out one. Austin Jordan and Luke Eitner came in relief and combined gave up 1 hit and 1 run. As it got to the 7th inning the Express found themselves down by 1 run to the visiting wildcats, 2-1. Justin Colindres reached first on an error by the third basemen, he then advanced to second on a passed ball. Zack Odum then doubled to left field and Colindres scored from second to tie the game up at 2. Max Odum was then intentionally walked, the pinch hitter Stephen Dietl was hit by a pitch to load the bases. that set everything up for first-year utility man, Juna Correra to hit a sacrifice fly which let Odum score and the Express walked it off in the second game of the series.

Sunday was a new day for the Express and Wells College started Chase Sebastian. The Express actually were down 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Justin Colindres scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at 1. Sebastian ended up going 4 innings giving up 3 runs, 4 hits, and walking 6. Bradley Perry came on in relief for the Express as they tried to hold on and Perry went 1 and a third giving up 2 runs. In the bottom of the third, the Express were able to get on the board again thanks to a sacrifice fly from Aaron Izquierdo that scored Max Odum. The Express didn't score again until the 7th inning when Max Odum singled sending Dylan Capello all the way home. At that point, the Express was down by a score of 8-3. Unfortunately, the runs kept coming for the Wildcats and they'd defeated the Express once again by a score of 13-3.

Baseball will be back in action Tuesday when they host Cazenovia College before they head to Myrtle Beach!
