MEIER AND ACQUAVIVA LEAD EXPRESS IN DOUBLE-HEADER SPLIT WITH CAZENOVIA

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells College softball team snapped a ten game losing streaking with a 2-1 thrilling victory over Cazenovia College in game one of their North Eastern Athletic Conference double-header held on Sunday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. The Express fell in game two 18-10. The Express improve to 1-11 (1-7 NEAC), while the Wildcats falls to 4-5 (3-1 NEAC).
 
Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) led the Express on the day finishing 4-6 with the game winning RBI in game one, while earning the victory on the mound in game one. Alyssa Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) was equally impressive, finishing the day 5-6 with three RBI's, while Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) finished 4-7 on the day.
 
Express starting pitcher Lorelei Meier would steal the show in game one. After allowing one run on two hits in the first inning, Meier buckled down the rest of the way, scattering three hits, while striking out nine, allowing zero walks and holding the Wildcats scoreless over the final five innings.
 
Despite the stellar pitching from Meier, the Express would find themselves down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) and Kristen Ryan each reached on a single to start the inning and after a fielder's choice kept runners at first and second with one out, Molly Ploof (Lake Placid, N.Y./Lake Placid) stepped to the plate and ripped a game tying RBI single, scoring Ryan. Meier then stepped up and blasted a go ahead double to the fence, giving the Express a 2-1 lead heading into the final inning.
 
Meier took the ball in the seventh and did what she had been doing all game, tossing a 1,2,3 inning, striking out one while not allowing a ball out of the infield to seal the Express' first victory of the season.
 
In game two the Express looked to be down out after the Wildcats jumped out to a 9-1 lead after the third inning. However, the Express exploded for eight runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game 9-9. The comeback would be short-lived as the Wildcats responded with a seven run top of the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth en route to the run rule shortened victory.
 
Acquaviva paced the Express in game two, finishing 2-3 with three RBI's and a double. Juli Vibbard (Burlington Flats, N.Y./Edmeston) finished 2-4 with two RBI's and a double,  Ploof finished 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, Ryan added two hits in four at bats, while Brittany Stanton (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) added a two-run double in the fourth.
 
The Express return to action tomorrow when they travel to take on Morrisville St. at 3 p.m. in Morrisville, N.Y.
