EXPRESS FALL TO BOWIE ST. AND HUDSON VALLEY

(Myrtle Beach, S.C.)─ The Wells College softball team remained winless on the young season after falling 8-0 to NCAA Division II member Bowie State University and 13-5 to Hudson Valley Community College on Wednesday afternoon at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Kelly Cornwell (Caledonia, N.Y.) paced the Express on the day finishing 2-5 with a double and a run scored, while Abby Williams (Tilton, N.H.) finished 2-5 with two RBI's. In both games, Wells' opponents used big innings to earn the victory.

The Express threatened in the top of the first inning against Bowie State after Cornwell and Brittany Stanton (Deposit, N.Y.) reached on back to back singles, but the Bulldogs buckled down, inducing a roller to the pitcher for the third out.

Bowie struck in the bottom of the second plating an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead but, the big inning would come in the fourth as the Bulldogs scored five runs on six hits to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs would seal the victory in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs for the 8-0 win.

It was a game of missed opportunities for the Express, who stranded six runners on base. Williams and Juli Vibbard (Burlington Flats, N.Y.) each tallied a hit for the Express, while Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y.) suffered the loss on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one.

In game two the Express looked to be down and out after Hudson Valley posted 11 runs in the first three innings but the bats would come alive for Wells in the top of the fifth.

With one out, Alyssa Acquaviva got the rally started for the Express, singling up the middle. Cornwell followed with a double to the right center field gap, putting runners on second and third. Acquaviva scored on a fielder's choice and Cornwell followed with the second run after an error by the shortstop kept the inning alive. With two runs already in and two more runners on base, Williams stepped to the plate and sent a bloop single into right field scoring two more runs, cutting the deficit to 11-5.

While it looked as though the momentum had shifted to Wells, Hudson Valley responded in the bottom half with a two-run homerun that triggered the run rule, ending the game with a 13-5 victory.

The Express conclude their spring trip tomorrow when the take on Bowie State University and Grace College at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
