EXPRESS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST MORRISVILLE

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells College softball team made a valiant comeback effort in game two of their North Eastern Athletic Conference double-header falling 16-14 to the Morrisville State Mustangs on Thursday evening in Aurora, N.Y. The Express dropped game one 14-2 (5 inn.). The double-header loss drops the Express to 1-17 (1-13 NEAC) while the Mustangs improve to 13-13 (10-4 NEAC).

Brittany Stanton (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) paced the Express finishing the day 5-6 with four RBI's and two doubles. Alyssa Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) finished 3-5 with four RBI, while Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) finished the day 4-5.

Kayla Walker (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) led the Mustangs finishing the day 4-9 from the plate with 10 RBI. Walker blasted a grand slam and added two doubles, finishing game one 3-4 from the plate with 9 RBI.

The Mustangs took advantage of nine Express walks in game one en route to the 14-2 run shortened game. Morrisville led 8-0 after three innings and would use a six run fourth to seal the victory. The Express scored their only two runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) and Abby Williams (Tilton, N.H/WRHS).

In game two, both teams combined for 30 runs on 39 hits. The Express jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, plating one run in both the first and second inning. However, the Morrisville bats came alive in the third inning, scoring six runs on seven hits as the Mustangs held a commanding 6-1 lead after three. Morrisville continued to add to their lead, scoring three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, and six more in the seventh, en route a 16-3 lead heading into the last frame.

The Express would make things interesting in the bottom half of the seventh scoring 11 runs on 11 hits. Meier collected two hits in the inning. Acquaviva drove in four runs on a single and a double, while Stanton had two doubles and two RBI's in the inning. Despite the comeback effort and the tying run at the plate, it would be a lazy pop out to the third base side that would end the comeback bid.

Wells returns to action tomorrow against SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference double-header set to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Aurora.
