Women's Tennis Notches 8-1 Victory Over Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Wells College women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Penn College on Wednesday at the West Branch Tennis Club. The Express improve to 3-6 overall on the year while remaining undefeated in two North Eastern Athletic Conference matches. Penn College dips to 1-8 overall and to 1-1 within the league.

Wells now boasts 18 victories in their last 21 North Eastern Athletic Conference tennis matches dating back to a 5-4 victory over Penn St.-Harrisburg on Mar. 31, 2012.

For the second-straight match, Wells posted three doubles victories to open play. Senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) partnered with junior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles to post their second-straight 8-1 win. The tandem of freshman Danielle Bautista (Moorpark, Calif.) and sophomore Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) shut out their opponent at No. 2 doubles.

Freshmen Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) combined to post an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles, placing the Express up by a 3-0 margin entering singles play.

At No. 1 singles, Heath attempted a come-from-behind rally but eventually fell to her opponent, Melissa Stabley, via scores of 6-4, 3-6 and 10-6. Four of the remaining five singles matches were won by Wells as Benedetto, Bautista, Sanborn and Wells posted 6-0, 6-0 wins against the Wildcats. Maturine won her No. 3 singles match, 6-0, 6-1.

In a stretch of three matches in three days, Wells will play their second of their NEAC road trip against Lancaster Bible this Friday, Apr. 10 at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa. at 3:30 p.m.
