Wells College Suspends Women's Tennis Program

The Wells College department of intercollegiate athletics has announced that it has suspended operation of the women's tennis varsity program for the current 2017-18 season and upcoming 2018-19 season.

This decision was made based on lack of student-athlete interest in participation and the inability to sustain a roster that meets minimum NCAA participation requirements.

During the hiatus, Wells College will review and evaluate the status of the program.

"This is a decision that we took very seriously and made with proper consideration," Wells College Director of Athletics and Physical Education Mike Lindberg said. "Our athletics department and facilities staff will maintain proper upkeep of the tennis facility for continued use and enjoyment by our campus and surrounding communities."

Women's varsity tennis was inaugurated at Wells College in 1975 and has had 11 coaches in program history. The team has had 11 winning seasons including a six-year stretch from 1978-83 under the first-ever head coach Peter Balbert when Wells went 42-26.

In the 2016-17 season, Wells was 3-3 against NEAC opponents and 3-7 overall. The team did not compete in three scheduled fall 2017 matches due to its reduced roster.
