Season In Review: Wells College Women's Tennis

Season In Review: Wells College Women's Tennis

Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The Wells College women's tennis team completed another strong season in 2013-14, rebounding from a tough start to enter the NEAC West Division Tournament as the second-seeded team. Numerous individuals made great personal improvements across the tough conference schedule in which they won five-straight games before drawing their only league defeat against Penn St.-Abington.

  • NO. 4 SINGLES: Sophomore Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) took home the No. 4 singles title at the 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Tennis West Division Individual Tournament. Benedetto became only the seventh player in team history to claim an individual title in singles play. Most recently, Ayumi Takeuchi posted a victory at No. 3 singles during the 2012-13 season. Ana Lucia Riley '11 was the last Express women's tennis player to pick up the individual title at No. 4 singles. With the individual title, Benedetto earned NEAC First Team All-Conference honors for her efforts on Friday.
  • THE "HUNT" FOR ALL-CONFERENCE: Sophomore Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 loss in the No. 5 singles semifinal, but rebounded to edge Keuka's Danielle Delgatto by an 8-5 score in the consolation match. Hunt picked up Third Team All-Conference merits with the consolation round victory.
  • CAN'T TOUCH THIS: During the regular season of play, Wells has won 16-of-19 regular season NEAC matches dating back to the 2010-11 women's tennis season and has qualified for the West Division championship match in two of the last three seasons of play. The Express also rebounded from an 0-6 start to win six-straight matches in the spring, racking up five NEAC victories before falling to Penn St.-Abington prior to the postseason.
  • SIX AND SIX: Heading into the NEAC Tournament, Benedetto posted a six match winning streak at No. 4 singles before ultimately falling to Alexandra Murionka in a thrilling three set match on Apr. 19 versus Penn St.-Abington. Furthermore, Benedetto and doubles partner Miku Kugo (Toyota, Aichi, Japan) also racked up a six match winning streak before losing to the Penn St.-Abington duo. Hunt was 4-2 in league play this year and partnered with Mizuki Furuta (Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan) at No. 3 doubles to accumulate a 5-1 NEAC record.
  • PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After helping her team to their first victory of the year in late March, senior captain Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference West Division Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Vanno defeated her singles and doubles opponents from Houghton and passed former student-athlete and Wells College women's tennis Head Coach Katie Somerville '03 to capture ninth place all-time in career singles wins. Additionally, her 20th collegiate doubles victory placed her in a three-way tie for 10th place in team history alongside Heidi Blackwell '83 and former teammate Kelly Pietruch '13.
