WELLS MAKES IT A CLEAN SWEEP OF ST. ELIZABETH

Morristown, N.J.–  The Wells College softball team (3-3) pounded out 16 hits and came back to defeat the College of St. Elizabeth Screaming Eagles (0-16) 6-5 in game one of their afternoon double-header in Morristown, N.J. The Express continued their hot hitting in the knight cap as Lorelei Meier hurled a one hit shutout and added two RBI's as Wells defeated the Screaming Eagles 10-0 in a five inning, run-rule shortened victory.

Kelly Cornwell and Paige Stone led the Express on the day with five hits each, Brittany Stanton added four hits, including 3-4 in the second stanza, while Abby Williams chipped in with three hits.

In game one the Screaming Eagles jumped out a quick 3-0 lead, sending eight players to the plate in the bottom half of the first inning. The Express would battle back, plating a run in the second and two in the third to tie the game, 3-3. St. Elizabeth would take the lead back in the bottom half of the third on a throwing error as the score would hold at 4-3.

The Express came alive in the top of the six, Aly Mann, Stone and Savanna Duh all reached base on singles and Rebekah Coons blasted a double as Wells scored three runs to take a 6-4 lead.

The Screaming Eagles would threaten in the bottom of the seventh, pushing across a run with two outs, bringing St. Elizabeth to within one at 6-5. Pitcher Aly Mann took over and settled down, working a slow roller to third for the third and final out.

Mann earned the win on the mound tossing 7 innings, allowing four earned runs on six strike outs.

It was all Wells in the second game as the Express jumped out a 5-0 lead after the first inning and led 8-0 after two. Lorelei Meier was impressive on the mound yielding one hit over five innings while fanning four to earn the win. Meier helped her own cause at the plate going 2-3 with 2 RBI.

The Express return to action Wednesday, March 31st at 4:00 p.m. against Elmira College in Aurora, N.Y.
