RUTGERS-NEWARK TAKES TWO FROM EXPRESS

Newark, N.J.–  The Rutgers-Newark softball team shutout the Wells College Express 8-0 in game one and used a late rally in game two, to top the Express 11-4 and complete the double-header sweep on Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J. The sweep drops Wells to 1-3 on the year, while the Raiders improve to 6-6.

Amelia Welch (Warrensburg, N.Y./Warrensburg) led the Express on the day going 3 for 5 from the plate, while Tina Aita paced Rutgers with three hits and five RBI's.

In game one both teams played scoreless through the first three innings, but in the bottom half of the fourth Ashley Angeli slapped an RBI single through the right side scoring Monica Bagan for a 1-0 Rutgers lead. The Raiders would plate three more in the fifth and four in the bottom half of the sixth for the 8-0 mercy rule win.

Samantha Veneziano earned the victory for Rutgers allowing just two hits and three walks, while Aly Mann (Walden, N.Y./Valley) suffered the loss on the mound tossing 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and eight walks.

The Raiders jumped ahead in game two plating three runs in the bottom half of the first. The Express would answer in the top of the second as Welch reached on a single and Aly Mann doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. A sacrifice by Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison) would score Welch and Mann would cross the plate on wild pitch bringing the Express to within one, 3-2.

Clinging to a 4-3 lead in the fifth, the Raiders would extend their lead to 6-3 and would blow the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs to put the game out of reach. The Raiders bats came alive in the second game tallying a season high 16 hits.

Angela Riscinti picked up the Raider victory, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three. Freshmen Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 16 hits, while striking out three.

The Express return to action tomorrow against North Eastern Athletic Conference rival The College of St. Elizabeth at 1:00 p.m. in Newark, N.J.
