WELLS SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH CEDAR CREST

Allentown, Pa.–  Aly Mann (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) allowed one run, on one hit, as the Wells College Express softball team won their season opener, 3-1, in game one of the Friday afternoon double-header against the Cedar Crest College Falcons in Allentown, Pa. The Falcons bounced back in game two, holding on for a 9-7 win over the Express. Junior Rebekah Coons (Voorheesville, N.Y/Voorheesville) led the Express on the day with a total of three hits, three stolen bases, and one RBI, while Paige Stone (Madison, N.Y./Madison Central) chipped in with two hits and two RBI's. The Express improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 5-9.

The Express took the early lead in game one as Rebekah Coons led the game off with a hit-by-pitch, stole second and scored on a pass ball as the Express would hold a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Wells would add to their lead in the fourth as Ashley Mercure and Aly Mann both singled with one out. A Paige Stone single would bring home Mercure, while both Mann and Stone advanced on a throwing error. Mann would later score on a pass ball as the Express extended their lead to 3-0 after four.

The Falcons got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth. The Express loaded the bases and a walk by Mann would plate the first run of the game for Cedar Crest. Mann buckled down forcing a pop-up to the first base for the third and final out, leaving three runners stranded and preserving the 3-1 lead for Wells.

The Express defense took over from there as just three batter reach for Cedar Crest over the last two innings as the Express took game one, 3-1.

Game two had a much different story as the Express would find themselves down 9-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but two errors by Cedar Crest and three base hits from Wells would score four runs as the Express trimmed the lead to 9-7. Wells would have one last shot in the top of the seventh to complete the comeback, but the Express managed just one base runner as Cedar Crest held on for the week day split.

The Express will travel to Rutgers-Newark tomorrow for a double-header set for 12:00 p.m. at Rutgers-Newark in Newark, N.J.
