SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH MORRISVILLE

Aurora, N.Y.- Aly Mann (Walden, N.Y/Valley) allowed one run on three hits, while striking out four to lead the Wells College softball team to a 2-1 victory in game one of a North Eastern Athletic Conference double-header against Morrisville State College on Saturday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. The Express fell to Morrisville by a score of 8-6 in the night cap. With the split Wells improves to 6-6 (5-3 NEAC), while the Mustangs fall to 5-19 (5-5 NEAC).

Kelly Cornwell (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) led the offense for Wells finishing a combined 4-7 with two RBI's and a run scored in the split.

In game one both teams played to a scoreless tie through the first three innings, but Wells would get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth. Singles by Cornwell and Brittany Stanton (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) to go along with a pass ball put runners at second and third with nobody out. After Mann was hit by a pitch to the load the bases, the Express struck, scoring on a pass ball to take a 1-0 lead. On the next pitch Ashley Mercure (Granville, N.Y./Hartford) hit an RBI single scoring Stanton for a 2-0 lead, and the eventual game winning run.

Morrisville scored in the top of the sixth, but were unable to generate any more offense off of Mann, who was stellar on the mound, allowing just one walk, while inducing 11 ground balls.

Game two was a tale of two stories as both teams played scoreless through the first four innings, before coming alive in the final three. Morrisville would explode in the top of the fifth, plating seven runs on eight hits to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Express did not lie down, scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth inning to trim the lead to 7-4. Morrisville added an insurance run late in the seventh and the Express would manage just one run in the bottom half as the Mustangs held on for the thrilling 8-6 victory.

After combining for just five hits in game one, both clubs bashed a combined 21 in game two.

Cornwell led the Express with three hits and two RBI's, while Lorelei Meier (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) and Stanton each added two hits apiece.

Wells returns to action tomorrow against NEAC opponent Cazenovia College for a double-header set to start at 12:00 p.m. in Aurora, N.Y.
