No. 3 Men’s Volleyball Team Wraps Up Cardinal Invite Undefeated

The No. 3 Wells College men's volleyball team beat Johnson and Wales University by a 3-0 score to finish the two-day Cardinal Invite at 3-0 on Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. John Fisher College. Wells won by set scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-15.

The Express improved to 7-0 on the season after finishing 3-0 at the Cardinal Invite. For the weekend, Wells finished with a set record of 9-1 and swept two of the its three opponents. In all three matches, the Express put together three-consecutive set wins to clinch each match.

Against the Wildcats, the Express had to rally in its opening set. Wells trailed by six points three times and got its first lead after the 43rd point at 22-21. The Wildcats fought back to tie the first set at 23-23, but Wells scored the next two points for the opening-set win after a Justin Williams' kill followed by an attack error.

Wells never trailed in the second set and after giving up the first point of the third set, rallied with 10 of the next 11 points for a 10-2 lead and never looked back.

Robert Patzer led or co-led the team in three categories. Patzer had a team-high pair of blocks (one solo), four aces and co-led in digs with Joe Zimmerman after each registered a half-dozen.

Caden O'Loughlin recorded a team-high 10 kills with most of his setups coming from Josh Undari's 22 assists.

Wells travels to SUNY Poly next Friday, Jan. 24 for a pair of matches. The Express start with a 2 p.m. match against Wentworth and follow that with a match against John Jay at 6 p.m.
