Senior Spotlight: Chloe Marcus

Senior Spotlight: Chloe Marcus

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, at least one Wells College senior spring student-athlete will be highlighted each weekend. Today's featured student-athlete is senior Chloe Marcus from the women's lacrosse team.

Chloe is a film & media studies major from San Diego, Calif., that primarily played midfield for the Express.

Wells head women's lacrosse coach Meg Milliman had the following to say about Chloe, "Chloe was a constant source of sunshine for this program. She is a great friend and teammate who everyone could count on. Chloe was always looking to challenge herself and get better for her team. Hers will be the smile that we miss the most. She always brought joy and laughter to the practice field, just by being her silly self."

Over her career at Wells, Chloe appeared in 27 games and started 20 and tallied 16 points from 13 goals and three assists. Chloe scooped 19 groundballs and caused a half-dozen turnovers. Her shooting accuracy was over 80 percent for shots on net with 25.

During the shortened 2020 season, Chloe appeared in both games as a starter with three points from a pair of goals and one assist with three groundballs, three caused turnovers and three shots on goal – two of which found the back of the net.

During the 2019-20 season, Chloe was also a member of the field hockey team.

Why did you choose Wells College?

I found out about the college from my grandmother who graduated from Wells in 1960. I didn't plan on applying, but I went to visit while I was looking at other schools on the east coast and fell in love with the atmosphere of the campus. The old brick buildings covered in ivy and the lake view were beautiful and this was the kind of college environment I wanted. The close-knit community along with the small and intimate class sizes were very desirable; so, I wasn't just a number in a huge university.  Also, the ability to play the sports I love (field hockey/lacrosse) and having the advantage of a D-III level to be able to focus on my academics as well, was awesome.

What is your favorite memory at Wells College as a student-athlete?

My favorite memories at Wells were hanging out with my teammates on and off the field; student-athletes at Wells are all so close, but the bond within your team is unbreakable and having an automatic family to go to when you need something especially coming in as a freshman, is great!

What are your plans after Wells College?

So far, I have no concrete plans at this point, but I'll definitely find a job; people keep telling me that I'm young and have time to figure my life out, but I want to further my education in my field (writing/screenwriting) and become a writer. My dream is screenwriting and it is a tough field, but I fully intend to try my best to make it. Any venue where I can write stories, I will take!

What advice would you give to the next person wearing your number?

This year has really opened my eyes to not taking things for granted because they can be taken away so fast. Our season this year was taken away because of this pandemic and something like this can happen at any time. You need to use this time to your advantage and play as hard as you can and be the best player and teammate you can while you still can.

If you had a favorite class during your time at Wells College, what was it and why was it your favorite?

My favorite classes at Wells were my creative writing classes (fiction/nonfiction) with Professor Becca Myers. She made me fall in love with writing and discover that it was something I was passionate about and that it was what I wanted to do for my profession. The structure of these classes was also the perfect creative space that pushed me to write beyond my comfort zone in some cases, and in others being more aware on constraints with word limitations.

What will you miss the most about being a student-athlete at Wells College?

I will really miss my teammates; they were my best friends on campus and were my family for four years and it's hard to say goodbye especially because I live on the other side of the country from all of them. I will also miss my coaches because they have been my mentors for four years and have helped me grow as a person, but I know that I can always reach out to them for questions about the world. I will also miss Wells as a campus and community; it is such a remote and isolated environment and the perfect place to be lost in your studies and sport, I will miss that as I'm thrown into the busy world.
