Express Suffer First Setback, Immediately Rebound in Midweek Back-To-Back

BRYN ATHYN, PA / BUFFALO, NY - It was a busy and challenging midweek slate for the Wells women's lacrosse team, who underwent two long road trips on Tuesday and Wednesday as they traveled to take on Bryn Athyn and Hilbert. While the first of those two games resulted in a 14-9 loss to an extremely resilient Bryn Athyn squad, they didn't stay down for long, immediately rebounding the following night to secure a 15-1 victory over league-foe Hilbert.

On Tuesday, the fast-paced Express ran into a very thorough and methodical Lions team that contradicted their playstyle in many different facets. The whole match was an interesting battle of concepts, as the explosive and up-tempo Wells style of play was usually immediately countered by very controlled and precise Bryn Athyn possessions for most of the evening.

In the end, the Lions managed to slow down the Express' vaunted attack, holding them to under 10 goals, a feat which had not been accomplished by any of Wells' opposition so far this season. Despite suffering their first loss of the 2024 season, the Express fought well against a Lions team that not only moved to 8-2, but also cemented themselves as a clear player in the United East - the Express' old stomping grounds.

Wells showed signs of a comeback early in the 4th quarter, but after cutting the deficit to 3 multiple times in the final frame, the Express couldn't break through and saw their comeback bid fizzle out after conceding a couple late scores to the Lions.

Jade Epp led the Express attack in the Tuesday matchup, scoring 4 goals and bringing her season total to an impressive 40 scores.

Reigning AMCC Player of the Week Lydia Thomas also kept up her great production, scoring 2 goals and also contributing 5 ground balls along with 2 draw controls.

Hannah Lamont had another good outing on the draw, recording 6 draw controls to pair with 2 goals. She also made some extremely smart plays, showing wisdom beyond her first year status by notching 3 huge assists in the game.

Although the trip to Pennsylvania didn't go how the Express had hoped, they had to put it behind them rather quickly, as Hilbert was awaiting them the next day and would be looking to take advantage of a Wells team that would surely be running out of steam after a tiring road trip.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Wells women had plenty of gas left in the tank.

On Wednesday in Buffalo, less than 24 hours after facing off against Bryn Athyn in Pennsylvania, the Express were right back to business, cruising to a 15-1 victory and keeping their AMCC record spotless at 5-0.

Lydia Thomas and Hannah Lamont each had great showings in their 2nd game in as many days. They both logged 3 goals and 2 assists and managed to scoop up myriad ground balls with Thomas securing 5 and Lamont grabbing 6.

This time around, it was a different Wells first year that handled the bulk of the scoring. Logan Lomonaco led the Express with 4 goals on the night, showing incredible durability by putting in a very charged effort despite most likely suffering from the fatigue of back-to-back away matches. The Binghamton, NY native also flexed her superior speed and control, notching a game-high 11 ground balls to go along with 4 draw controls, a complete performance in a big bounce-back opportunity for the Express.

Lauren Spiegel also had herself a great night in goal, only allowing 1 Hilbert shot to breach the cage in what was her 10th win on the season.

With the victory on Wednesday, the Express have made sure that there will be more lacrosse to be played in Aurora this season, and will now host the semifinals of the AMCC tournament on May 27th. Before that though, the Express still have 2 regular season matchups left, including a meeting in Cresson, PA this weekend where they'll take on the Mount Aloysius Mounties with the AMCC Regular Season Title on the line. That game will begin at 3:45 on Saturday. The live stream link will be available on our webpage.
