Senior Spotlight: Julia Bashaw

Senior Spotlight: Julia Bashaw

With the cancellation of the remainder of the spring season and the winter championships, at least one Wells College senior spring student-athlete will be highlighted each weekend. Today's featured student-athlete is senior Julia Bashaw from the women's lacrosse team.

Julia is a health sciences major from Cape Vincent, N.Y., that primarily played attack for the Express.

Wells head women's lacrosse coach Meg Milliman had the following to say about Julia, "Julia returned to us after a year away in the Navy and came back a better teammate and a better lacrosse player. She was always looking for a way to help anyone who needed it, including the coaching staff. We were so happy that she came back 'home' to her family for her final season with the Express."

Over her career at Wells, Julia appeared in 13 games and started five and tallied four points from one goal and three assists. Julia scooped up a half-dozen groundballs and with one caused turnover. Her shooting accuracy was perfect with both her shot attempts finding the net.

During the shortened 2020 season, Julia appeared in both games with one as a starter and recorded one point from an assist and also registered a pair of groundballs.

Why did you choose Wells College?

My aunt, who passed away when I was in high school, went to Wells, and always told us stories about her time spent there. I came to Wells as a transfer student during my Junior year. I'm glad I was able to transfer to Wells, being there made me feel closer to my aunt, as well as helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my future, and how to achieve my goals.

What is your favorite memory at Wells College as a student-athlete?

My favorite memory would probably be joining the lacrosse team at Wells. When I transferred in, I wasn't prepared to play sports again but was convinced on the first day of classes to join the lacrosse team, although, I had never played lacrosse before.

What are your plans after Wells College?

I hope to go to school to become a physician's assistant, and then hopefully become an officer in the United States Navy (I'm already in the Navy reserves as an enlisted hospital corpsman).

What advice would you give to the next person wearing your number?

Always work hard, even on days you're not playing your best. Enjoy your time on this team and wearing No. 6, because you only get four years to play, and trust me it will go by in the blink of an eye (although I only wore this jersey for a year and a half, it was the best year and a half of sports I've ever played). Always remember that this team is your family, and no matter what, they have your back.

If you had a favorite class during your time at Wells College, what was it and why was it your favorite?

I'm torn between bioethics and organic chemistry. In bioethics, I loved learning about different ethical dilemmas within the healthcare field and how you would be able to solve them. It also helped that I have my military background because the ethics in the medical field in the military is different than it is in healthcare on the civilian side. I love organic chemistry because Professor Burwell is such a great professor and I actually understood what was going on. It made me truly want to learn about it, and the benefits of knowing why this is useful in the healthcare field.

What will you miss the most about being a student-athlete at Wells College?

I will miss my team, and how close we were able to grow even with a shortened season. We're called the 'Mob' for a reason. I will also miss being able to cheer on all the other team sports at Wells, because going to any game at Wells is always an exciting and fun time no matter what sport it is.
