Kubo Homers Twice In Softball Victory Over Canton

The Wells College softball team picked up its first win of the young season with a doubleheader split against SUNY Canton on Sunday, March 24 at the Wells Turf Field. SUNY Canton rallied for a 5-4 victory in the opening game, and Wells overcame an early four-run deficit to win 8-5 in the second game.

Wells is 1-3 in its first four games of the year and will host doubleheaders Wednesday, March 27 and Thursday, March 28 beginning at 5 p.m.

SUNY CANTON 5, WELLS 4

Wells took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tori Miller singled in Carley Ryan with the first run of the game. Naomi Kubo followed with a single to right that brought in Jessica Conover. Then, Miller scored on an infield throwing error.

The lead held up into the top of the seventh inning when SUNY Canton scored three times. The first three batters of the inning reached on walks, and a bases-clearing double later in the inning gave Canton its first lead of the game. The Roos scored five runs on one hit in the inning.

Wells scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't deliver the tying run.

Naomi Kubo was the starting pitcher and carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth. She had two strikeouts and allowed three hits. At the plate, she had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Jenna Devora, Jessica Conover, and Tori Miller also hit safely for Wells.

WELLS 8, SUNY CANTON 5

Wells scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Jenna Devora that scored Lizzie Monnat from first.

Canton rallied for five runs in the top of the second on seven hits.

Wells got back into the contest with a three-run home run to left field by Naomi Kubo that brought in Jessica Conover and Tori Miller. The Express were within 5-4 after two innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kubo came through again. A two-run homer to left scored Conover and Wells went ahead. Lizzie Monnat had an RBI double later in the inning to score Gabby Sawyer.

An insurance run came in the sixth on an RBI ground out by Monnat that scored Ellie Schwoebel, who started the inning with a double.

Jessica Conover picked up the complete-game victory in the circle. She had three strikeouts.

Kubo homered twice and drove in five runs. Jenna Devora and Jessica Conover had two hits each and Conover scored twice.
