Cobleskill Takes NEAC Softball Doubleheader

The Wells College softball team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a home doubleheader against SUNY Cobleskill on Friday, March 29 at the Wells Turf Field. Cobleskill won the first game 6-0 and the second game 10-7.

Wells is scheduled to return to action Sunday, March 31 at noon against SUNY Poly.

SUNY Cobleskill 6, Wells 0

Wells was held to four hits in the game. Lizzie Monnat and Jenna Devora singled in the first inning, Naomi Kubo singled in the third, and Tori Miller singled in the seventh.

Cobleskill did most of its damage with a four-run second inning and added single runs in the fifth and seventh. Rachel Hall was the winning pitcher with two walks and two strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.

Jessica Conover pitched a solid game allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

SUNY Cobleskill 10, Wells 7

The Express took control early with five runs in the bottom of the first to build a 5-1 lead. The rally started with a pair of walks, then Lizzie Monnat and Jenna Devora singled to bring in three runs. Jess Conover later doubled, and Ellie Schwoebel singled as Wells totaled five runs on four hits and left the bases loaded.

Cobleskill got back into the game with a pair of runs in the third, but an RBI single from Tori Miller in the bottom of the third extended the Wells lead to 6-3.

Cobleskill regained the lead with four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and an insurance run in the seventh.

Wells got one run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Gabby Sawyer.

Devora led Wells with three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Gabby Sawyer had two hits and drove in a run. Jessica Conover had two hits and scored twice.

Naomi Kubo pitched seven innings and had five strikeouts.
