Softball Team Opens Season in South Carolina

Albertus Magnus
The Wells College softball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to open its season with a pair of games against Albertus Magnus College and Rhode Island College on Sunday, March 7.
In the opening game against Albertus Magnus, both teams had their best innings in the second as the Express responded to the Falcons' seven runs with four runs of its own. Leading the way in the fourth for Wells was Naomi Kubo, who belted a three-run double. Scoring on the play was Olivia Maish, Jennifer McCumber and Hannah Harmon. Kubo then reached home after a Brie Gratacos single.
Maish had a pair of hits in the game in going 2-for-3. Single hits came from Kubo, McCumber and Gratacos. The Express featured three pitchers that included Jenna Devora, Hailie Bennett and Jessica Conover, with the latter recording three strikeouts.
In the matinee game against Rhode Island College, the Express trailed by five runs heading into the final inning before falling.
Gratacos, Kubo and Bennett all went 2-for-2 at the plate with the latter two each belting doubles with RBIs to account for six of the seven Express hits with Devora adding a one-run single.
Kubo, Maish and Bennett scored the team's runs with the latter suffering the loss from the hill after nearly going the distance with three strikeouts.
The Express return to action tomorrow, Monday, March 9 with another pair of afternoon games in Myrtle Beach with the first against Norwich at 1:30, followed by a 3:30 game against Keystone.
