Express Softball Shows Glimpses of Success in Pair of Defeats by Mount Aloysius
AURORA, NY - The Express softball squad suffered a set of defeats against Mount Aloysius over the weekend in their second home AMCC series in the span of 48 hours. The Mounties jumped out early, dominating game 1 and only allowing the Express to secure 1 hit.
Game 2 had a different story though, as it was the Express who threatened early. In the first two frames of the second matchup, the Wells women loaded up the bases. In both scenarios, the Express didn't record a single out, giving themselves a couple premiere chances to come away with runs.
Even before that, the top of the order came out on fire for the Express in the 1st inning of game 2.
Christa Koagel, one of the Express' star first years managed to draw a walk to start off the game, then used her superior quickness to steal second and set herself up in scoring position early on in the matchup.
The Express were adjusting well and learning from their mistakes made in the first game. They became more aggressive on the basepaths in the rematch, forcing some Mounties mistakes and allowing themselves to have some excellent scoring opportunities. The Express absolutely have the makings of a squad that can cause headaches for opponents after making some good mid-series adjustments, a credit to their coaching staff and head coach Grace Van Horn who has used her experiences at the highest levels of college softball to provide the necessary changes for the Express.
After Koagel's steal, Taylor Robinson knocked a double to the deepest part of left field, scoring Koagel and giving the Express some amazing energy to begin the series finale.
A couple walks later, the Express loaded the bases, but failed to push any more across after a fresh Mounties pitcher came in to stall the Wells momentum.
The momentum wouldn't fade in the 2nd inning, as the Express came right back and loaded them up courtesy of a walk by Kylie Olay followed by two singles from Morgan Brown and the aforementiond Koagel.
Robinson came to bat again and managed to draw a walk, notching another RBI for her in a notable 2 RBI game 2 for the first year from Marmora, New Jersey.
After that the Express would strand more runners, but still managed to show flashes of offensive brilliance. The success is certainly there for a young Express squad.
Perhaps more AMCC ventures will allow for more excellent growth for an extremely youth-laden Wells team. Their AMCC schedule will continue on Wednesday of next week when they travel to Alfred State for a series with the Pioneers.
