Comeback Highlights Softball Split With Cazenovia

The Wells College softball team used a huge rally to come back and win the opening game of a doubleheader against Cazenovia College by a 9-8 score on Friday, April 14 at the Wells Turf Field. Cazenovia took the second game by a 7-3 score.

Wells is 4-12 overall and 4-8 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Cazenovia is 7-13 overall and 5-3 in the NEAC. The Express hosts Morrisville State College on Saturday, April 15 at 10 a.m. Please note this time change. The games were originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but have been moved up in consideration of a rainy weather forecast for later Saturday afternoon.

Wells 9, Cazenovia 8

The Express scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Naomi Kubo led off with a home run over the left-field fence and Sammie Jones walked and later scored on a wild pitch.

Cazenovia answered with five runs in the third, two more in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to build an 8-2 advantage. Wells scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 9-8 and the Express held on for the win.

The Express totaled five hits in the seven-run rally. Jessica Conover delivered a two-run double in the rally and Kubo tripled with the bases loaded to bring in three runs. Jones bunted and squeezed in Kubo with the go-ahead run.

Jessica Conover earned the pitching win in relief. She pitched the final three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Kubo pitched the first four innings.

Cazenovia 7, Wells 3

Cazenovia scored three times in the first inning and never trailed as the Wildcats salvaged the second game of the doubleheader. Lizzie Monnat was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game. Baylee Pearce had two hits and an RBI.

Pearce started in the circle and allowed seven runs, four earned, on seven hits and five walks. She had two strikeouts.
