Softball Team Drops Heartbreaker in Matinee Matchup

The Wells College softball team was on the cusp of victory in its second game in Myrtle Beach on Monday, March 9. The Express built a 7-0 lead after two innings and finished the top of the sixth with a pair of runs for a 9-8 lead, but Keystone College rallied in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of its own to steal the contest at 10-9.

In the end, it came down to the seven batters Wells left on base that ultimately allowed Keystone a successful rally. The trio of Olivia Maish, Jenna Devora and Jennifer McCumber combined for six hits with two apiece. All three batters had extra base hits with Devora and McCumber each belting doubles and finishing with four RBI each. Maish was one of the batters left on base after she didn't reach home after a triple.

Single hits went to Naomi Kubo and Tori Miller, while Jessica Conover picked up an RBI. In the field, McCumber executed a double play, while Conover took the loss from the mound in relief after Hailie Bennett left after four innings of work and a 7-6 lead.

The opening game had the makings of a slugfest after Devora belted the team's first home run of the season. Devora got the team's first and last RBIs of the game and finished with three. Norwich had its best inning in the first with eight runs, but the Express responded with three runs in the top of the second for an 8-5 game.

Against Norwich, the trio of Maish, Kubo and Devora accounted for all six Express hits. Maish scored twice and added a single RBI, while Kubo scored once with two RBI. Conover took the loss on the mound, while scoring single runs for Wells were Bennett, Devora, Indian McCain and Hannah Harmon.

The softball team next plays Wednesday, March 11 with a 1:30 p.m. game against Eureka, followed by a 3:30 p.m. contest against Iowa Wesleyan.
