Game 2
Penn St.-Abington
In a pregame ceremony against visiting Penn State Abington, three seniors from the Wells College softball team were honored that included Gabby Sawyer (Maine, N.Y.), Brittney Meade (King Ferry, N.Y.) and Jenna Devora (San Antonio, Tx.) on Sunday, May 2.
Although the Express dropped both games, Wells took an early 1-0 first-inning lead in the second game after Olivia Maish (Palmdale, Calif.) scored on a passed ball. Penn State Abington went ahead by a 4-1 score in the top of the third inning, but Wells rallied in the bottom of the same inning with another Maish run to cut the deficit in half. The Express stranded three runners in the third with their best opportunity to retake the lead.
Abington added three and five runs in the next two innings, respectively, and in the bottom of the fifth Wells finished with a pair of runs after Jennifer McCumber (Albany, N.Y.) earned an RBI by scoring Erin Normile (Binghamton, N.Y), followed by Serina Sheradin (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scoring Devora.
Maish led the team with three hits that included an opening at-bat triple as the team's leadoff batter. Four other batters also registered hits that included Normile, Sheridan, Tori Miller (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Devora with the latter picking up an RBI.
Devora and Maish split time from the circle with Maish taking the loss after allowing seven hits from 17 batters faced.
In the first game, the highlight for Wells came in the fourth inning when Devora hit a home run for the team's lone run in a 9-1 final.
Morgan Adams (Waverly, N.Y.) and McCumber also recorded hits, while Devora took the pitching loss after going the distance and allowing 12 hits from 33 batters faced.
The Wells softball team next hosts SUNY Morrisville on Monday, May 3 before wrapping up the regular season on Thursday, May 6 against visiting Penn College.
