Softball Team Splits Conference Doubleheader

The Wells College softball team split a pair of games with visiting SUNY Morrisville on Monday, May 3. The Express took the opener by a 6-3 score before falling in the matinee match by an 11-3 final.

In the first game, the Express controlled the game and never trailed. After taking a 3-0 lead after two innings, Morrisville responded with a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 game.

Olivia Maish's (Palmdale, Calif.) triple in the fourth inning was the winning hit that brought home Morgan Adams (Waverly, N.Y.) and Gabby Sawyer (Maine, N.Y.) for a 5-2 lead. The Express added an insurance run the next inning after Jenna Devora (San Antonio, Tx.) scored the team's sixth run. Devora reached first on an error and was put in scoring position by Brittney Meade (King Ferry, N.Y.), before Jennifer McCumber's (Albany, N.Y.) double scored her.

Devora went the distance from the circle and faced 32 batters. The senior hurler allowed nine hits with one strikeout.

In the second game, a six-run Morrisville third inning that included a grand slam proved too much to overcome. Wells trailed by a pair in the first but responded with a run to cut the deficit in half. Morrisville added another pair in the second before their big third inning put them ahead by a 10-1 score. The teams played even in the second half of the contest with each team adding a run.

Wells plated six hits from six different players that included Erin Normile (Binghamton, N.Y.), Serina Sheradin (Fayetteville, N.Y.) Hannah Harmon (Spencer, N.Y.) Devora, Maish and McCumber, with the latter adding another RBI double. Maish and Sheradin scored the Express runs, while Devora and Maish split time from the circle.

The softball team next hosts Penn College on Thursday, May 6 to wrap up its regular season.
