ALFRED ROLLS PAST EXPRESS IN NON-CONFERENCE MATCHUP

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells College women's lacrosse team fell to the Alfred University Saxons 17-8 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif./Helix) led the Express with five goals, while Elizabeth Barclay (Laporte, Pa./Lincoln) finished with six saves in net. With the loss the Express fall to 4-4 on the season while the Saxons improve to 1-5.
 
Alfred was led by Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) who had a team high four goals and seven draw controls while Ashley White (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial) had three goals and one assist. Goalie Kate Baughman (Rush, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) earned the win in net with eight saves.
 
Despite the score, the Express kept pace with the Saxons, who held only a slight advantage in shots (32-26) and ground balls (11-9). However, the Saxons held the lead in draw controls (23-4).
 
The Express jumped out to an early 2-1 lead but, the Saxons would retaliate with seven straight goals to open up a six goal lead (8-2). Wells trimmed the lead to four with goals by Bass and Stefanie Miller (Barton, N.Y./Tioga Central) but Alfred once again responded, this time with a five goal run to take a 13-5 lead into halftime.
 
The Express managed to outshoot the Saxons 16-12 in the second half but would be unable to cut into the lead as Alfred held on for the victory.
 
Wells takes the field again Saturday, April 9 against conference foe Penn St. Abington at 1 p.m. in Aurora, N.Y.
