Men’s Lacrosse Special Teams Shine in Season Opener

AURORA, N.Y. - The Wells College men's lacrosse team opened its season against Elmira College on Saturday, March 27. While the scoreboard favored the visiting Soaring Eagles, the Express held the edge in special teams play.

Wells finished the contest with a pair of man-up goals and one man-down tally to account for three of its four on the day. Mikey Petrina (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the team's first goal of the season after taking a feed from Justin Dude (Hilton, N.Y) while killing a penalty about 10 minutes into the opening quarter.

Jacob Stine (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) added a pair of man-up goals in the second and fourth quarters and Shane Syms (Scranton, Pa.) scored at even-strength in the third to round out the scoring for the Express.  

Petrina and Quinten Battle (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) led the team's offensive attack with each registering six shots and the latter recording an assist on the day.

Syms won 75 percent of his faceoff attempts after going 12-for-16 on the day that helped Wells hold a groundball edge at 35-24. Stine, Syms and Jeronimo Camou (Greenwich, N.Y.) each finished with five groundballs with Camou also recording a dozen saves in net.

Trevor Stein (Spencerport, N.Y.) and Dude combined for eight groundballs with each scooping four, while three each came from Battle and Petrina. Also contributing to the groundball game was Mohamed Rzane (New York, N.Y.), Colton Jaquith (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Dan Stevens (Williamsville, N.Y.), Kevin Schrank (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Petrina.

The men's lacrosse team next travels to Hilbert College on Saturday, April 3 with a 2 p.m. start.
