Men's Lacrosse Rallies, Edged By Elmira

The Wells College men's lacrosse team rallied from a four-goal deficit early in the second half to tie the score, but Elmira College scored the game-winning goal midway through the fourth quarter and held on for a 9-8 victory over Wells on Wednesday, March 13 at the Wells Turf Field. Both teams are 1-3 on the season.

Elmira led 3-1 after the first quarter and 4-2 at halftime. The lead grew to 6-2 in Elmira's favor after a pair of goals from Sam Shaw in the first three minutes of the second half.

The Express climbed back in to the contest with a 4-1 run to close the third quarter. Quinten Battle scored three of the goals in that run, and assisted on the fourth, scored by Nathan Ramsey. Wells trailed 7-6 headed to the fourth quarter.

Padraic Iannello scored a game-tying goal on an assist from Natham Ramsey for Wells just 34 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Elmira's James Mayer scored to put the Soaring Eagles back in front. Wells tied it at 8-8 with 9:54 left on a goal from Nathan Ramsey. Sam Shaw scored the ninth goal for Elmira with 7:40 remaining and it held up as the game-winner. It was the sixth goal of the game for Shaw.

Wells took possession away in the final 30 seconds and had a chance to tie it in the closing moments of the fourth quarter but the shot was saved by the Elmira goalie.

Wells goalie Trevor Stein made 11 saves and Elmira goalie Jacob Mattice had 15 saves. The Express won 14 of 20 faceoffs, and Cash Lawson won 13 at the X. Wells had 32 ground balls, led by nine from Lawson.

Quinten Battle finished with five goals and one assist. Nathan Ramsey had two goals and an assist. Iannello scored once, and Jared Shearer and Cash Lawson each had one assist.

Wells is back in action Tuesday, March 19 at home against The Sage Colleges at 4 p.m.
