RIT TAKES TWO FROM WELLS SOFTBALL

Aurora, NY –The Wells College softball team came up just short in both games of their non-conference double-header to Rochester Institute of Technology  losing 7-2 and 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Aurora. With the loss the Express fall to 2-22 on the season while RIT improves to 15-15 on the season.

The Express finished with six hits on the day including a two-run homerun by Amelia Welch (Warrensburg) in game one. Aly Mann (Walden) suffered the loss tossing seven innings allowing six earned runs while striking out seven RIT batters in game one. Beth Cereo (Port Biron) took the loss in game two, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven over seven innings.

The Tigers were led by Emily McPherson (Pompey) who finished the day 3-7 with three runs scored while teammate Jenna Mausolf (Hudson) finished 3-6 with five RBI. The Tigers also received two impressive pitching performances. Sarah Hamel (Templeton, MA) earned the win in game one tossing seven innings, while allowing just two earned runs while striking out nine. Mary Medino (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) earned the win in the night cap hurling seven innings of shutout softball, scattering four hits while striking out 11 Express batters.

Game one was pitcher's duel as both Mann and Hamel had held the other's team scoreless through four innings. The Express would strike first as Amelia Welch would smash a 1-0 offering over the left field fence giving the Express a 2-0 lead. The Tigers would finally get to Mann in the top of the sixth, plating four runs, capped by a two run single by Mausolf. The Tigers would again add to their lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three more runs on a double by Jessica French (Springwater) and two errors by the Express closing out the win for RIT.

Game two provided yet another pitcher's duel as one run would be scored over the first six innings of play. The Tigers would score first as McPherson would score from third on a fielder's choice to second base putting the Tigers up 1-0 after the top of the fourth. The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the seventh as a walk, an error, and a fielder's choice would plate two runs for the Tigers extending the lead to 3-0 and sealing the game two victory.

The Express will turn around and head to Elmira College on Wednesday, April 22nd for a non-conference double-header with the first pitch set for 6:30 pm in Elmira.
