Baseball Splits With The Golden Tornados

Wells College baseball kicked off their Myrtle Beach trip with a doubleheader against the Geneva College Golden Tornados Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, the Express jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a SAC fly from Zach Young and a single from Zac Legaretta sent home one run each. The Tornados would answer right back though with 2 runs of their own at the bottom of the first. Wells would score again off the bat of John Valinoti sending home Aaron Izquierdo in the third inning. Geneva College jumped all over the Express in the next three innings putting up 10 runs and grabbing a 12-6 lead heading into the 6th. In the 6th, Aaron Izquierdo doubled home Zack Odum, and Zac Legaretta scored Izquierdo with a ground ball. This was not enough for the Express and the Tornados took game 1, 12-8. Austin Jordan got the start in game one and was relieved by Ryan wiser and Connor Carr-Matthews

Mason Smith was on the mound to start the second game and gave Wells College a great chance to win this one. Smith went 5.1 innings giving up only one run to the Golden Tornados. He was relieved by Zack Cronk who closed out the 6th inning and Mike Nascimento finished on the hill for the Express. The story in this game was Jonathan Haines who hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning that gave the Express a 4-1 lead. This was enough for Wells College to secure the win 4-3 and a split on the day with Geneva College.

Baseball will be back in action tomorrow at 7 PM against Albertus Magnus, in Myrtle Beach.
