Baseball Swept By Berks At Home

Wells College baseball hosted a conference doubleheader Monday afternoon against the Penn State Berks Nittany Lions.

Yesterday, the Lions took down the Express 17-10 in game 1.

Austin Jordan was on the mound for the Express and pitched his first complete game of the season (7 innings, 7 hits, 7 runs, and 4 strikeouts). At the plate, the Express struggled to push a run across home plate. It too until the 5th inning when Zac Legaretta started things off with a single to center field. Joe Horne was then hit by a pitch (which makes him the Wells College all-time leader in HBP) and Jacobi James sent home Legaretta on a fielder's choice. That would be the only run allowed by Penn State Berks in game one defeating the Express 7-1.

Jonathan Haines was on the mound for Wells College in game 2. In the bottom of the second, Zach Young hit his first collegiate home run that scored Zack Odum and gave the Express a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the second, Max Odum doubled and sent home Bradley Mills to increase the lead to 3-1. Going into the bottom of the fifth the Express was behind 8-3, then Jacobi James singled home Zack Odum who led the inning off with a double. At the bottom of the 7th, Wells opened a rally that started when Lance Phillips and Zac Legaretta walked. Aaron Izquierdo then singled sending home Phillips. That was followed by Zac Legaretta scoring on a passed ball and John Valinoti sending home Izquierdo on a single to center field. This all brought on the bottom of the 9th inning with Wells down by a score of 9-7. Zac Legaretta smacked a single to left field, followed by a pinch-hit double from James Camacho that scored Legaretta putting the Express down by only one run with two outs. Unfortunately, the game would end on a deep fly out and Berks swept the Express, three games to none.

Baseball will return home this Wednesday to host Cazenovia College.
