'On This Day' Paulino Leads Men’s Basketball Team to Third Win in Last Four Starts

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Jan. 4, twelve years ago in 2009.

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men' s basketball team notched its fourth win during the program's inaugural season by taking a 68-65 victory over Hobart in the consolation game of the second annual Park Lodge Hotel Tournament held at Regis College in Weston, Mass. on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009.

The win gave the Express victories in three of its last four starts and also avenged an early December season loss to the Statesmen.

This time around it was a more competitive game by virtue of the number of times the contest was tied (12) and the amount of lead changes (18).

Both teams shot an identical 25-for-50 from the floor, but rebounding was the story of the game as Wells out-rebound Hobart 35-20 and limited the Statesmen to just three offensive rebounds the entire game thanks to 15 defensive boards by Juan Paulino.

Paulino finished with a team-high 17 rebounds and 22 points and was one of three Express players to hit double-digit points. For the junior forward team captain, it was his third-consecutive double-double game and he was chosen to the Park Lodge Hotel Tournament All-Tournament team.

Darrell Bullock added 18 points with a dozen coming from Greg Jones. Helping setup the trio was Craig Gaylord, who had a team-leading eight assists.
