Women's Tennis Sets Down Penn College, 7-2

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's tennis team concluded its regular season of action on Saturday, defeating Penn College by a 7-2 score. Wells evened its overall record at 6-6, finishing its North Eastern Athletic Conference schedule with a 5-2 mark while the Wildcats drop to 3-10 and to 3-4 against league foes. 

Wells has qualified for the playoffs for the fifth-straight season and will compete as a team this Wednesday, Apr. 27 in the NEAC West Division Tournament at the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa. The individual portion of the tournament will commence on Thursday, Apr. 28 at 1 p.m., starting with doubles play. 

Senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and Yuna Furusawa (Hirakata, Osaka, Japan) picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles before the tandem of senior Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and junior Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and classmate Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. 

Benedetto picked up a solid 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles, finishing the year with an 11-1 mark at the top singles flight for Wells. Hunt would finish the regular season with a 7-2 record at No. 3 singles, earning the 6-3, 6-2 win against her counterpart from Penn College. 

Sanborn secured a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles before Wells blanked her No. 6 singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Wells has racked up a 4-0 record at No. 6 singles, winning her last four matches for the Express.
