'On This Day' Women’s Basketball Team Completes Florida Trip

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Dec. 20, six years ago in 2014.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Wells College women's basketball team wrapped up play in Florida with a strong second half against Carthage College on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 in the St. Pete Classic, held on the campus of Eckerd College.

A pair of Jasmine Thomas late free throws gave Wells a 26-24 advantage in second-half points before Carthage hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to take the second half, 27-26, that gave the Lady Reds the edge in both halves.

Wells, in only their fifth season as a varsity program, competed against two NCAA Division III Tournament teams at the St. Pete Classic. Friday, the Express faced-off against Wisconsin Lutheran who lost to No. 2-ranked Hope in the first round, while Saturday's opponent, Carthage, lost to No. 3-ranked DePauw in the third round of last year's NCAA Championship. The Express lost to the eventual NCAA Division III Champions from FDU-Florham in the first round to conclude their 2013-14 season.

Nine different players scored at least one point for Wells, who were led by Lindsay Achzet, who tallied nine points from the floor. Holli Erkson, who eclipsed 500 career points on Friday against Wisconsin Lutheran, registered eight for the Express, and Kamarie Maturine pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

The Lady Reds shot a blistering 17-for-31 (54.8 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. Trailing by 42 points with about nine minutes to go, Wells had its best run of the day to shrink the deficit in the waning minutes of the contest after a 13-0 run.
