Women’s Tennis Records 7-2 Victory Over Oswego St.

AURORA, N.Y.Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) posted her fifth-straight singles victory Thursday afternoon as the Wells College women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over the Lakers of Oswego St. at the Wells College tennis courts. With the victory, the Express improve to 4-9 overall following the non-conference contest. The Lakers conclude their season with a 3-14 overall record.

Takeuchi, a rookie, has won five straight singles matches for Wells after posting a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles over the Lakers' Mady Paul. The last Wells student-athlete to post five-straight singles victories to open a career was Aya Shiraishi in 2010.

Senior Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles for the Express, tying for the modern-day NCAA Division III program record with 23 singles victories. Copfer is tied with Lisa Gibson '06, who was a member of the Wells women's tennis program from 2002 to 2005.

Junior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) edged Kelsey Wilson at No. 2 singles, posting 6-2 and 6-4 victories for her fourth singles victory of 2012-13. Senior Kelly Pietruch (Whitesboro, N.Y.) dropped the first set by a 6-2 margin before winning the next two by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to complete the comeback against Olivia Knierman. Freshman Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) set down Wini Decker 6-1 and 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Copfer and Takeuchi continued their hot streak, posting an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over the tandem of Hannah Rawlings and Wilson from Oswego St. Freshman Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and Pietruch completed the scoresheet for Wells with an 8-5 win at No. 3 singles over Paul and Emily Birchall.
