Copfer Sets Wells NCAA-Era Career Singles Record In 9-0 Win

VERONA, N.Y. – Senior captain Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y.) collected her 24th career singles victory, setting a modern-era program record for career singles victories as the Wells College women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over the Wildcats of Cazenovia College Friday afternoon at Turning Stone Resort Casino. With the victory, the Express improve to 5-9 overall and to 3-2 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Wildcats fall to 2-7 overall and to 1-5 in league play.

Across her four-year career with the Express, Copfer has earned 24 singles victories for Wells, eclipsing Lisa Gibson '06 who posted 23 singles wins from 2002 to 2005. Current records display Catherine Babbitt '83 as having 24 career singles victories, but statistics from the 1982 spring season are currently unavailable – Wells became a full-time NCAA Division III member prior to the 1986-87 academic year.

Junior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was an 8-1 winner at No. 2 singles while Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) remains undefeated in singles play on the season following an 8-3 win at No. 3 singles for the Express.  Senior Kelly Pietruch (Whitesboro, N.Y.) powered past Kerry McHugh with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles while freshman Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles. Senior Emma Martin (Concord, N.H.) edged Megan McDermott at No. 6 singles via set scores of 8-6, 6-4.

Copfer and Takeuchi defeated their opponent at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, while Heath and Vanno partnered to stifle their No. 2 doubles opponents 8-2. Pietruch and freshman Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) stifled Kacey Jervis and McDermott via an 8-0 score.
