Softball & Women's Lacrosse: "On This Day" 4-7-19

"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 7

Softball: April 7, 2019

The Wells College softball team split a doubleheader at Gallaudet University on Sunday, April 7. Both teams scored 10 runs in their wins with Wells winning the first game 10-8 while Gallaudet took the second game. It was the Express' first North Eastern Athletic Conference win of the young season.

In the first game, the seventh inning propelled the Express after scoring five runs. Jenna Devora had four hits to lead the team.

Wells scored twice in the first on a two-run single by Devora that brought in Lizzie Monnat and Carley Ryan. Gallaudet tied it in the bottom of the first but Wells broke through with four more runs in the second. Ryan had a two-run single, then Devora and Gabby Sawyer each drove in a run with consecutive ground outs. Devora added an RBI single in the third and an RBI double in the sixth.

Sawyer and Autumn McLain had RBI hits in the top of the fifth, while Jessica Conover earned the pitching win in relief after allowing four earned runs over six innings with six strikeouts and eight hits allowed.

Devora's big day at the plate was a 4-for-5 effort with a double, a run scored, and five RBIs. Carley Ryan drove in two and scored twice. Sawyer had two RBIs. Monnat reached base four times and scored twice.

In the second game, Naomi Kubo was the Express' best player after pitching three innings with four strikeouts, while offensively belting one of Wells' hits. Conover finished her second game of the day from the circle in relief.

Women's Lacrosse: April 7, 2019

The Wells College women's lacrosse team broke open a one-goal game with seven-consecutive goals to go into the break with a 12-4 first-half lead before cruising to a 20-12 win over D'Youville College on Sunday, April 7 at the Wells Turf Field.

Six different players scored for the Express, but it was Mackenzie Maloney's tally that gave the Express the lead for good at 3-2 and Wells never looked back after five Wells players scored in the seven-goal barrage.

Each team scored eight times in the second half and Wells held a margin of six or more goals throughout the final 30 minutes. Maloney had eight goals and four assists to lead the Express. She surpassed 200 career goals on the day and now has 204 goals in her career. Savanah Connors had five goals and one assist, and Renee Bartosz had three goals and three assists. Julia Smith scored twice, and Miranda Mingen and Alexius Stanton had one goal each.

Defensively, the Express caused a dozen turnovers and were led by Molly Doubet's three. Wells got a pair of caused turnovers each from Erin Persons, Mingen and Anna Bozeat, with the latter also recording 14 saves in net for the win.

Wells held a 15-14 advantage in ground balls and 21-12 advantage in draw controls. Wells players, coaches, and fans participated in the Lax-4-Life national campaign to raise suicide prevention awareness.
