MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team posted a straight-set victory over D'Youville College before falling to the Mavericks of Medaille College by a 3-0 score on Saturday. The Express concluded the day with an 8-5 overall record alongside a 3-6 mark within the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
Wells, who fell victim to the Spartans by a 3-0 score earlier in the year, swept D'Youville via scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19. The Mavericks toppled the Express in the second match of the afternoon by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-22.
Sophomore Brannon Perdicho (Victor, N.Y.) led the Express with 12 kills on 29 swings to hit .276 in the match. Senior Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) recorded 27 assists while classmate John Farruggia (New Hartford, N.Y.) tallied 10 digs for Wells. Freshman Jonathan Haines (Wellington, Fla.) contributed with five solo blocks, tying the team record for a single match.
Wells served up eight service aces, falling only one short of tying the season-high mark, as Nipps led his team with three. Junior Liam Kaylor (Falls Church, Va.), who ranked second on the team in kills, joined Perdicho with two aces to his credit.
The Express dropped their second match of the day to Medaille, who remained undefeated within conference play (9-0) following the match. The Mavericks were able to defeat the hosts from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute in four sets.
Kaylor led Wells against the Mavericks with 10 kills and five digs. Farruggia and Perdicho added eight and seven kills respectively, accounting for 25 of the team's 29 kills in the match. Once again, Nipps posted a team-best three service aces while Haines stepped up at the net front with three solo blocks.
The Express return to action Sunday, Mar. 13 to wrap up the league's crossover weekend at SUNY Poly against Hilbert at high noon.
