Pair Of Close Losses For Wells Men's Volleyball

The Wells College men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday, Feb. 9 in a tri-match at SUNY Poly. In the opening match, SUNY Poly defeated Wells 3-1 and in the second match Rivier University won 3-1 over the Express.

Wells is 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The Express continues conference play Sunday, Feb. 10 at the College of Saint Elizabeth at noon.

SUNY Poly 3, Wells 1

The Wildcats pulled out a close match over the Express to open the NEAC season as three of the four games went to extra points. Set scores were 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 31-29.

SUNY Poly won the first five points of the opening set but Wells climbed back and took a 17-16 lead. The set was tied three times down the stretch, including at 22-22 but the Wildcats won the last three points in a row to close out the opening set.

Wells claimed the second set after jumping out to a 17-11 advantage. SUNY Poly fought off one set point at 24-23, but Wells scored the final two points on kills from Caden O'Loughlin and Justin Williams.

In the third set, SUNY Poly had three match points with a 24-21 lead, but Wells won three straight on a kill from Ryan Turner and two SUNY Poly errors. The Wildcats responded with two straight points to win it 26-24.

Each team had match points in the fourth set before SUNY Poly got a kill and a block to wrap things up 31-29.

Wells hit .241 for the match and SUNY Poly hit .246. Wells had 53 kills and 20 errors. Josh Undari had 42 assists. Caden O'Loughlin and Robert Patzer each had 16 kills. Undari served two aces. Joe Zimmerman led Wells with nine digs. Patzer had three block assists, and O'Loughlin and Cooper Colesante each had one solo block and one block assist.

Rivier 3, Wells 1

Set scores were 25-20, 27-25, 18-25, 25-21. In the pivotal second set, Rivier led 24-19, but Wells fought back and tied the score 24-24 and 25-25 before Rivier took it in extra points.

Caden O'Loughlin led Wells with 19 kills and Robert Patzer had 14 kills. Each also served three aces and shared the team lead with nine digs. Josh Undari had 38 assists, two solo blocks and two block assists.
