MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team posted back-to-back road losses on the campus of SUNY Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon. The losses eliminated the Express from the North Eastern Athletic Conference postseason as their in-conference record went from 2-1 to 2-3 following the matches – the Express conclude their second season as a varsity program with an overall record of 8-19.
Wells dropped their first game against the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College by a 3-0 score (18-25, 17-25, 17-25). The Chargers have since concluded their season with an unblemished in-conference record (5-0) and enter the upcoming NEAC postseason as the top seed. The Chargers hit .342 as a team while the Express mustered 20 kills alongside 15 errors for an .074 mark. Freshman J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.) led the way with seven kills while classmate Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) assisted 10 kills. Freshman John Farruggia (Mt. Markham, N.Y.) contributed nine digs defensively.
For Lancaster Bible, both Joey Brennen and Keith Mitzel hammered home eight kills while Alex Bahn assisted with 18 of his team's 36 strikes. Defensively, Corey Leonard and Andy Nguyen each psoted seven digs. Brennen led the way with one solo block and three block assists in the victory.
Podczasy turned it on in the second game of the double dip, but the Express fell to the Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology by a 3-1 margin (18-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-25). Podczasy posted a team-best 14 kills and made only six errors for a team-leading .242 hitting percentage. Nipps led the way with 20 assists while Farruggia once again led defensively with 12 digs to his credit. Freshman Winston Pappoe (Bronx, N.Y. and sophomore Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) each recorded a a solo block and three block assists.
Timothy Maracic tallied 11 kills for SUNYIT, leading the team in that category. Jeff Knapp assisted 32 of his team's 46 kills while also contributing defensively with 12 digs to lead his team.
