MARCY, N.Y. – The Wells College men's volleyball team opened their fourth season as a varsity program Friday afternoon on the campus of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute, falling to Vassar in straight sets before posting a 3-0 victory against Mt. Ida. With the split, Wells' overall record stands at 1-1 following the season's first day of competition.
Wells posted a 3-0 loss to Vassar via scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-9 before sweeping the Mustangs of Mt. Ida 25-23, 25-17 and 25-15. Today's win versus Mt. Ida is the team's earliest victory in their four year program history dating back to 2012.
In the match versus Mt. Ida, Wells hit a collective .433 to record the fourth-best hitting percentage in team history. Freshman Brannon Perdicho (Victor, N.Y.) racked up 10 kills on 13 total swings without an error to hit .769 in his second collegiate game. Sophomore Liam Kaylor (Falls Church, Va.) posted eight kills on 16 attack attempts, ranking second with a .438 hitting percentage. Junior J.J. Podczasy (Macungie, Pa.) led the team with two service aces.
Freshman Scott Litvin (Sayville, N.Y.) had a solid second game in a Wells uniform, assisting 30 of his team's 35 kills while tying for the team lead with five digs alongside Perdicho and freshman Jack Battumur (Denver, Colo.).
Against the Brewers in the first game, Wells saw their opponent hit at a collective .351 clip that included 29 kills on 57 swings. Offensively, the Express mustered only 14 kills and committed as many errors for a neutral hitting percentage. Kaylor led Wells with five kills on 10 swings, hitting .400 to open his season. Litvin assisted 11 of his team's 14 kills while Kaylor tied with Battumur for the team lead with three digs.
Wells will face-off against D'Youville Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. before taking on the host Wildcats from the SUNY Polytechnic Institute at 3 p.m. in Marcy, N.Y.
