'On This Day' O’Loughlin Sets Career Kills Mark on Groundhog Day

'On This Day' is a Wells College Athletics feature series taking a look back on events that occurred on this day, Feb. 2, one year ago in 2020.

The Wells College men's volleyball team traveled to Erie, Pa. for a tri-match with Randolph-Macon College and host Penn State-Behrend on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020.

Caden O'Loughlin set the Wells College all-time record for kills during the tri-match by surpassing Brannon Perdicho's 1,307 total in the third set of the Randolph-Macon match with his final kill for career No. 1,308.

On this Groundhog Day, O'Loughlin finished with 13 kills against Randolph-Macon and then added another 18 in a victory over Penn State for a team-high 31 over seven sets to set the new kills all-time record at 1,326 and counting.

The Express topped the Yellow Jackets by set scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-12 in the opening match sweep and then followed that with a 3-1 victory over Penn State-Behrend with set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-21.

Against Randolph-Macon, O'Loughlin also led the team in digs with nine, while Cooper Colesante served up a pair of aces and Justin Williams finished with four blocks.

Against Penn State, Robert Patzer had a team-high 20 kills and shared the digs lead with Josh Undari with eight each. Undari finished the second match with 46 assists and 68 on the day, that included the assist on O'Loughlin's record-setting kill in the previous match. Joe Zimmerman added a pair of aces and Colesante finished with four blocks (two solo) against the Nittany Lions.
