Farruggia Recognized By North Eastern Athletic Conference

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Freshman John Farruggia (Mt. Markham, N.Y.) of the Wells College men's volleyball program was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference Men's Volleyball Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance this past week for the Express, the conference office announced late Monday afternoon. Farruggia and the Express are off to the best start in their two-year program history, posting a 7-7 record through their first 14 games of the season.

Wells is off to a 2-0 record against NEAC opponents thanks to victories over the Bison of Gallaudet University as well as the Wildcats of Cazenovia College this past Saturday. In four total matches this past weekend, Farruggia led his team with 2.17 kills per set, posting a team-leading .299 hitting percentage after committing only six errors in 67 total attacks. He also hammered home five service aces and contributed defensively with 17 digs (1.42 per set) cumulatively.

Against Cazenovia on Saturday, Farruggia hammered home 11 kills alongside only two errors for a .474 hitting percentage. He also posted three service aces against the Wildcats and posted nine digs. Against Gallaudet in the early set, he made only one error in seven chances while converting four of his attacks for kills.

Exiting play this weekend, Farruggia leads the conference with .76 service aces per set, ranking ahead of teammate C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.), who is averaging .61 service aces per set. On the year, Farruggia ranks first on the Express with 32 service aces and also ranks first in total blocks with 27 (10 solo blocks, 17 block assists). His .223 cumulative hitting percentage ranks second on the team.

The Express return to action this Friday, Mar. 8 as they participate in the York Invitational.
