Armlin Earns NEAC Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Freshman middle hitter Mathew Armlin (Fort Plain, N.Y.) of the Wells College men's volleyball team earned North Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week honors for his performance across the past week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Armlin and the Express are off to a 2-2 record through four games, their best start in program history.

Armlin becomes only the second player in the team's three year history to pick up Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week honors – then-freshman John Farruggia (Leonardsville, N.Y.) was recognized twice in the 2012-13 season for his offensive performance for Wells. Sophomore Derek Nipps (Turnersville, N.J.) and junior Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) have each earned Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week honors last season for Wells.

Across four matches for Wells, Armlin saw action in all 15 sets for the Express and racked up 27 kills in only 63 attacks for a .270 hitting percentage. Armlin also chipped in with a team-high 10 total blocks, including nine solo blocks, and also added 14 digs to average nearly one dig per set (0.93 d/set).

Against Bard on Saturday, Jan. 25, Armlin posted 13 kills with only two errors in 24 total attacks for a .458 hitting percentage, the highest single game total in team history (min. 20 total attacks). Versus Hilbert on Friday, Jan. 24, Armlin posted 10 kills in four sets in a 3-1 loss. He also added his first collegiate service ace and also posted four digs and four blocks.

Entering this weekend's slate of contests, Armlin is tied for the league lead with 10 total blocks. He also ranks second in total kills (27) and fourth in kills per set (1.80 k/set).

The Express return to action this Saturday, Feb. 1 as they face-off against the Bridges of Brooklyn College and the host Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
