Women's Basketball Turned Away By Houghton, 77-41

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Wells College women's basketball fell to the Highlanders from Houghton College on Saturday in the championship game of the Max Ziel Tournament, dropping a 77-41 contest. Wells falls to 3-1 overall on the year while Houghton remains without a defeat in three games on the season. 

Junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.) had a strong game for the Express with 16 points and five steals. Freshman Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.) racked up 10 points and posted five rebounds while classmate Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted nine rebounds. 

Cooper earned placement on the Max Ziel All-Tournament team for her strong performances throughout the weekend.

Wells shooters were unable to get hot, combining for a 22.6% mark from the floor against Houghton. Forced to play from behind for the entire game, Wells was forced into 25 three-point field goal attempts, the second-most in team history, but freshman Carley Ryan (Middleburgh, N.Y.) was the only member of the team to connect from distance. 

Houghton immediately took control of the game, using a dominant 29-4 scoring run through the first 9:20 of play to put the game out of reach. Wells rebounded in the second quarter, outscoring the Highlanders by a 14-to-7 margin, but Houghton kept the Express without any hope of a comeback, outscoring Wells by a 20-3 spread in the game's final 6:18. 

The Highlanders were led by Elle Reed's 20 points. Leslie Moose posted 13 rebounds while adding a team-leading six assists. 

Wells returns to action Friday, Nov. 27 as it participates in a two-day tournament at St. John Fisher. Wells will play the host Cardinals at 8 p.m. on Friday before taking on Union (N.Y.) on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m.
