Strong Second Half Not Enough In 67-58 Loss To Lancaster Bible

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite outscoring the visiting Chargers by a 39-36 margin in the second half of play, the Wells College women's basketball team posted a 67-58 loss to Lancaster Bible College on Friday. With the loss, Wells drops to 8-6 overall on the year and to 3-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The win boosts Lancaster Bible to 7-5 overall on the season and to an unblemished 5-0 in league play.

Senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) led the way with 21 points for the Express, securing four rebounds and three assists on the evening. Junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) was second on the team in point scoring with 10 – in addition, Knapp recorded a career-high eight blocks in the loss. Seniors Kristen Ryan (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) each recorded five assists, leading the team in both categories.

An Aubrey Folger layup elevated the visiting Chargers to a 12 point lead with 21 seconds remaining in the first half, a game-high lead for Lancaster Bible. In the half, the Chargers utilized Wells turnovers to score seven points en route to the commanding lead in the waning minutes of the opening stanza. The host Express committed 10 turnovers in the first half alone and Chargers shooters were sent to the line seven times, converting six foul shots.

Wells, however, was undeterred beginning second half play and ultimately outscored Lancaster Bible 16-to-4 in the half's first five minutes. With the game tied at 35 with 15:20 remaining in the second half, however, Katy Stover hit a clutch three-point basket to grant the guests the lead for good. Stover's hot shooting from beyond the arc continued into the later minutes of the second half as back-to-back three-pointers with 6:07 and 5:28 left, respectively, created an insurmountable nine point lead.

The Chargers were led by a 28 point effort from Stover, who also pulled down seven rebounds. Shanice Smith was a force for Lancaster Bible, pulling down 17 total rebounds and adding 16 points. Folger also chipped in with 16 points, falling one rebound shy of a double-double.

The Express return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as they face-off against the Wildcats of SUNY Institute of Technology in an 8:00 p.m. road contest.
