Women’s Basketball Team Honors Pair in Matinee Contest

The Wells College women's basketball team honored a pair of seniors that played significant roles in the women's basketball program over their time at Wells. In a pregame ceremony, head women's basketball coach Tara Ruckh presented game jerseys to the pair.

The Express got off to a slow start that set them back in defeat to visiting Cazenovia College by a 67-31 score. Wells played much better after the break and nearly doubled their output from the first half.

For the second time in as many days, Sonia Rivera (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team in scoring. The sophomore registered nine points to go with four boards and a pair of steals. Morgan Adams (Waverly, N.Y.) led the team in rebounds with eight while adding five points. Lydia Thomas (Colton, N.Y.) chipped in eight points with a half-dozen boards.

Mackenzie Kunkle (Selkirk, N.Y.) added six points and three boards. Jaivonah Adside (New York, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Wells with three points. Anna Bernatavitz (Elmira, N.Y.) had a team-high three assists.

The players who were honored included Maritza Scharoun (Bronx, N.Y.) and Jordan Jacobs (Tannersville, N.Y.), who is battling a knee injury this season. Both players had season bests last season in most of their statistical categories.

Jacobs is 11 points shy of 500 for her career and led the team in every category last season except rebounds. Jacobs also has accrued 350 rebounds, 127 assists, 94 steals and 67 blocks. Scharoun gathered 269 points, 362 rebounds, 58 steals, 56 assists and 22 blocks over three seasons and led the team in rebounds last season.
