Women's Basketball Rallies; Falls In OT

The Wells College women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit and pushed host SUNY Cobleskill to overtime but eventually fell 66-61 to the Fighting Tigers in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game Wednesday, Jan. 23.

The game was tied seven times and the lead changed five times.

Wells trailed by 10 points in the final four minutes of the game after a jump shot by Cobleskill gave the Fighting Tigers a 53-43 lead with 4:06 left. Carley Ryan made two free throws for Wells and nailed a 3-pointer on the next trip to cut the lead in half. After a defensive stop, Shelby Medovich scored, made a layup, was fouled, and converted the foul shot to bring Wells within two.

Cobleskill scored again to lead by four, and got a stop, but an offensive foul gave the ball back to Wells and Ryan made a 3-pointer. Wells sent Cobleskill to the foul line and the Tigers made a pair with 23 seconds left, but Medovich nailed a top-of-the-key 3-pointer to tie the score 57-57 with 16 seconds left. A game-winning shot attempt by Cobleskill was well-defended and off the mark.

Wells scored the first four points of overtime on layups from Medovich and Jordan Jacobs, but Cobleskill scored the last nine points of overtime and won by five.

Medovich was the leading scorer and rebounder for Wells with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan had 19 points. Jacobs had nine points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Wells scored 17 points off of 20 Cobleskill turnovers.

The Express continues NEAC play Saturday, Jan. 26 with a 1 p.m. home game against Penn State Abington.
