Women's Basketball Posts First Victory Of 2014

CANTON, N.Y. – Sparked by 26 points from senior Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.), the Wells College women's basketball team posted a 64-54 victory over the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon at the Roos' House. With the victory, the Express earn their first win of 2014 and improve to 5-4 on the season following the non-conference contest. The Kangaroos fall to 2-7 overall on the year.

Roser recorded her 23rd double-double dating back to last season, notching 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Express while adding five blocks, three assists and three steals. Junior Kaitlynne Knapp (Port Byron, N.Y.) added 10 points and four rebounds, blocking three shots en route to the victory. Junior Theresa Hernandez (Dewitt, N.Y.) tallied four assists and has struck for 11 assists in her previous two games.

Wells trailed by a game-high four points only 3:49 into the contest following a jumper by Janelle Bradish to create a 6-2 lead for the hosts. Wells, however, scored the game's next 12 points to take a commanding 14-6 lead following a layup by sophomore Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) with 10:45 left in the stanza.

The Express kept the Kangaroos at arm's length for the remainder of the contest, eventually building up an 18 point lead with 3:33 left in regulation time. SUNY Canton rallied in the waning minutes of the game, scoring nine of the game's final 10 points, including a three-point basket by Katlyn Hart with two seconds remaining.

The Kangaroos were led by Karyss Terrance and her 18 points and 15 assists. Brianna Sayer, Alicia Uhlein and Bradish each posted eight total points for SUNY Canton.

Wells returns to action this Tuesday, Jan. 7 as they face-off against the Giants of Keystone College at 5:00 p.m. on the road.
