Offense Comes Alive In Women's Basketball Win

The Wells College women's basketball team had its best offensive total in its last seven games and defeated visiting Wilson College 62-48 on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Wells moved back to .500 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference with a 6-6 NEAC record. The Express is 7-14 overall. Wilson is 9-12 overall and 4-8 in the NEAC.

Three double-figure scorers led the offensive attack for Wells. Kamarie Maturine had 20 points and 14 rebounds. Carley Ryan had 18 points and nine rebounds. Shelby Medovich added 17 points.

The Express held a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter as Maturine scored eight and Ryan scored seven over the first 10 minutes of the game. Wilson came back in the second quarter and Wells led 28-26 at halftime.

Wells held Wilson scoreless for more than five minutes at the start of the third quarter, but the Express managed only four points of its own and led 32-26. Wells closed the third with a 13-3 run to build a double-digit advantage. Medovich scored six of the 13 points in that run.

The Wells lead grew to 18 points in the fourth quarter and the Express ended up with a 14-point victory.

The Express defense limited Wilson to 16 field goals in the game and Wells forced 22 turnovers. Wells had 14 steals, led by five from Yanna Ososkalo and three each from Medovich and Maturine.

Wells continues a five-game homestand Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a NEAC North Division game against Penn College at 7 p.m.
