Courtney Participates In Costa Rica Basketball Tour
AURORA, N.Y. - Rising junior Chris Courtney (Auburn, N.Y.) of the Wells College men's basketball team was a participant in the Costa Rica Basketball Tour earlier this summer. Courtney joined a team of fellow student-athletes from colleges and universities across the country to take on Costa Rica's National Basketball Team and other top club programs.
In addition to the competition component of the trip, Courtney assisted with sports clinics for the local youths. One of the clinics was held at a local school in San Jose while another was in partnership with Special Olympics of Costa Rica. The group also visited Manuel Antonio National Park and Volcano Arenal during the tour with opportunities to zip-line through the rainforest, learn to surf, and encounter wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, toucans and iguanas.
Courtney enters his third season with the Express having played in 39 games, averaging seven points per game for his career after shooting 40.6% from the floor (56-of-138) with 23 three-point baskets as a sophomore. His free throw percentage of .920 (23-of-25) is the best single-season mark in team history and his career percentage of .804 (45-for-56) is the fourth-best in the team's seven year existence.
Beyond Sports, founded in 2010, is the first study abroad program designed specifically for student-athletes. To date, they have hosted athletes from over 140 different colleges across the country through summer, January term and semester programs in Costa Rica.
